About the Founder

Showing Up When It Matters

Donnell Nichols is a disabled veteran of the United States Navy whose life has been defined by one enduring commitment: showing up for others when it matters most.

After the Navy, that commitment did not go anywhere. He has led teams of veterans through New York City streets searching for missing autistic children. He has partnered with community leaders on security initiatives in the wake of hate crimes. He has served alongside disaster response organizations including the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross, where the pattern that would eventually become C4I first became obvious to him: in almost every emergency, the technology fails early and the people who know how to fix it are somewhere else.

He is currently pursuing a degree in Homeland Security at Arizona State University, with a focus on the role information technology plays in disaster response.

Why C4I Exists

He founded C4I Veteran Services Corp to accomplish three things at once:

• Help veterans build real careers in technology: not entry-level placeholders, but credentialed roles with a ceiling.
• Put the work itself to use: repurposing, repairing and building with enterprise-grade equipment gives structure and purpose to people who are used to having a mission and have lost one.
• Deploy veteran teams into disaster zones to re-establish the communications that everything else in a response depends on.

Those three goals are not separate programs that happen to share an office. They are one idea: give a veteran a mission, the right equipment and people who expect something of them, and the rest tends to follow.

How He Runs It

Three commitments shape how this organization operates, and he will tell you all three before you ask.

• Small and finished beats large and half-built. One program at one location, proven and measured, before the next one starts.
• Measure from the first cohort. Nobody has produced an honest answer to whether a model like this works. We intend to be the ones who do, and to publish what we find including the parts that fail.
• Say what is true about the evidence. C4I is not a clinical provider and does not treat any condition. Where the research supports what we do, we cite it. Where it does not exist yet, we say so.
